Professional Master's Degrees in Mathematics: Options in graduate programs

Abstract The mathematics community is being challenged to examine and revise graduate education to respond to the variety of demands for mathematically well-prepared graduates in business, industry, schools, and government. The professional master's degree that is designed to link mathematics to a specific career path is an important way to begin to address these concerns. The AMS, MER Forum, and SIAM are currently undertaking a joint project, funded by the NSF, to promote the development of professional master's degrees in mathematics departments. The scope of the project includes organizing two national workshops. The first workshop was held at NYU in November, 1998, and the second workshop is planned to be held at ASU on November 4-6, 1999. We will highlight salient features of the first workshop, give an overview of the plans for the workshop at ASU, and discuss what we would like to achieve.
