Finite Precision Representation of the Conley Decomposition

Abstract In a departure from its customary application, Ulam's method is used to approximate attractors and basic invariant sets of finite dimensional dynamical systems. Convergence of the method is proved for a class of Lyapounov stable attractors that support an SBR invariant measure. An analogy between the communication classes of the Ulam Markov chain and the basic sets of a hyperbolic map is discussed and some applications to numerical analysis are proposed.
