Modeling, Optimization, and the Internet

Abstract The most frequently solved computational problems are various optimization problems. The quality and speed with which they are solved affects our daily lives, from the distribution of electricity over the nation's grid of power lines to many other scheduling problems such as those of airline flights and crews.

As was already forecast a while ago, many computational tasks may one day not actually be done on our desktops or other computers at our disposal but may be shipped from those via the Internet to more powerful machines that also have the required software. The solutions are then returned to us.

I will demonstrate such an environment in which I (and thus ASU) have a major involvement. It includes modeling tools and solve engines, all provided for free to the public, funded by government agencies. It is a realization of the above scenario.
