Structural Optimization for Elastic Materials

Abstract The basic concepts and the mathematical background of structural optimization problems are described. We will study sizing optimization problems for a real-life example, namely to obtain the minimal weight or an even stress distribution of a unit injector rocker arm, that may consist of a linearly elastic material or of a nonlinearly elastic material, where the displacement and the stress field are given implicitly. Furthermore, we will present some results of shape optimization for real-life examples using the same methodology as above.
